Do I need to have a Web site?

Not everybody needs a Web site, but if you have a business or any need for networking, an online presence is a must. A Web site can be as simple as an online business card, but has unlimited potential if you're looking for something more complex.

When you see an advertisement for a business with a phone number, you know one way you can contact someone there. When you see a Web site address, you know you can probably learn more about the business and contact someone. If a potential customer is looking to do business with someone in your field, but only a competitor has a Web site, they are more likely to earn the business. It's easier for a person to passively learn about your services and have the option to contact you by phone or e-mail.

That is why being online is a must for businesses. In that case, the more ways to draw in a customer, the better. Many franchises provide a Web site for their stores that lists location, hours, a contact number and a few other basics. But to find it, a potential customer usually must enter in a zip code and find you. If the franchise also sells its services online, the store is now competing with its franchise parent. This is where even the most simple page comes in handy. A welcome page with an easy-to-remember domain name can tell the customer where to find you, or at the very least, redirect the person to your page on the franchise site and save the hassles of finding you by zip code.

The same purpose works if you keep your resume and other personal information on social networking sites. A personal site could simply list links to your Facebook, LinkedIn or other profile pages, or it can include more. People maintain sites to showcase portfolios of their work, links to work items, blogs about anything and countless other ideas.
